Filming Snow White and the Huntsman at Marloes Sands

After seeing the filming of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and Robin Hood on the Freshwater West beach, Third Star in Barafundle Bay we have again the film crews back in Pembrokeshire for the filming of Snow White and the Huntsman on my favourite beach Marloes Sands.

Filming should be around September 26th – 29th and should mainly involve filming of about 80 horses galloping towards a computer generated castle* on Gateholm island. The film has some amazing actors in it like Kristen Stewart as Snow White and Charlize Theron as Ravenna, the Evil Queen. Other actors include Ian McShane, Bob Hoskins and Eddie Izzard. However the filming at Marloes Sands might not actually include any of these big names 🙁

Might have a look at the filming next week to see if they are doing it right 😉

Update September 27th 2011
Drove down to the film set today. Was a bit worried access would be severely restricted but I found out from the National Trust officer that the production company was not granted a licence to close off the beach and was specifically ordered to leave the Marloes Sands beach and the path to it opened to the public at all times.

So that meant the path from the National Trust to the beach and the beach itself is accessible. Of course that includes the coastal path which offers very good viewing of the film set, but don’t forget to bring your extra strong binoculars and camera lenses.

When I was there they were filming on the NW part of the beach. I had a walk down the SE side but by the time I came back they moved a bit towards us so my friend and I were politely asked to move to the side. A security guard also politely asked me not to take any photos of the actors on the beach as they are a bit sensitive about it. Don’t know how some other photos were taken of the filmset. Maybe they have special privileges 😉 At least you can walk right on the set and nobody really minded, we were quite discreet and did not get in the way. The tent at the top of the ramp is used for catering and there were some nice smells coming from there that made us mighty hungry. Should have asked for a snack as by the time we arrived at the Lobster Pot in Marloes and the Griffin in Dale they were both closed for food serving 🙁

Sorry guys, there is temporarily something wrong with the Google Picasa system that results in the below gallery to only show the old photos, not the new ones. Click here for my public Facebook album, but you have to log into Facebook to see it: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150316501078391.348870.524823390&type=1

Uploaded them manually so they are all there below!

Climbing the eminence, and then some

My original plan for this days hike was Y-Garn but that soon changed once I reached the peak and gazed upon the inviting summits of Glyder Fawr and Glyder Fach.
As if that was not enough and after all the struggle of descending off Glyder Fach I made a silly move and ascended up Tryfan. Now for those who haven’t been up this mountain I must tell you it more resembles a high stack of very big rocks that in many cases precariously lean on each other. This kind of mountain probably never would exist in a country like Slovenia which is prone to earthquakes. Just as good as if there would have been an earthquake while I was up there I would soon find myself meta-morphed into a pâté pancake.

The previous day I climbed the “horseshoe” and the next day Snowdon via the Pyg trail.

Cwm Gwesyn and the Llyn Brianne reservoir

This is marked as the toughest walk in the Brecon Becons & South Wales book and it turned out to be living up to its name. The most difficult part was trying to not get lost on Bryn Rhudd at the same time as not loosing interest in the walk as well. The views on there are almost desert-like, nothing but dried grass and boggy moors. Even the sheep are sensible enough not to stray that far from the valleys.

The day of the walk also happened to be the hottest day so far in 2010 and the humidity was excruciating. Despite it still not being a complete sunny day I managed to rack up quite a nasty sunburn and don’t forget we are talking about Wales of all places – go figure 🙂

This walk also takes you to some very remote areas of Wales and in the 6h 20min it took me to walk it I didn’t see a single person until reaching the Glangwesyn farm when I asked for directions.

After the walk I took a drive in my car up through the valleys of the man-made Llyn Brianne reservoir that was completed in 1972 so the same young age as I. Some nice views there so definitely recommended!

That these collars are no gentle persuasion tools can be discovered by watching people trying them on themselves. In this video the guy tests it on himself and it starts at about 3.30 min, but you can watch the whole thing, I don’t care. This other video is shorter and its tested by a girl.

Both the above videos are actually very funny as they are done under consent, but it does have a serious back tone as dogs probably wouldn’t be so prepared to wear them.

Aja, pardon, sem šele zdaj opazil, da sem gornji del začel pisat v angleščini. Se mi ne ljubi zdej spreminjat.

Woody Pines in Cardigan

Woody Pines (woodypines.com)

What a great night. Never though I would like country & western music. Funny thing to hear it in the heart of Wales.

The guys played great and made a great atmosphere despite the hall not being completely full.

As a fellow guitarist I was impressed and did appreciate how quickly the vocalist and guitarist Woody recovered from a broken guitar string.

By the way, I thought the name of the band “Woody Pines” came from an association with the local North Carolina forests. In fact that is the name of the apparent leader of the group Woody (last name Pines, of course).

They are currently touring Scotland and they come very warmly recommended!

Dara Ó Briain in Bristol on 2 March 2010

Photo: The Sun

This was the first time I have gone to a headlining stand-up comedy show. The one in the comedy store in London was similar in ways very very different. This was in a proper theatre and there was no intimidation or any kind of boo-ing coming from the crowd. In fact there was a fare bit of very well humoured picking of certain members of the crowd from Dara’s side.

I have seen Dara on many TV shows, primarily on Mock the Week. By the way, I hope to see his former colleague from that same show Frankie Boyle, next month in Swansea. The show itself was great and the seat I had was very good, quite close to the stage, but not close enough to be picked on – or spat on: In some of Dara’s exuberant verbal outburtsts there was some obvious salivary discharge being made and very visible from the angle I was seeing it from (sorry Dara :-).

As I am reading his wiki page I see he is only 8 months older than me. I feel quite humble, but I do beat him in the hair quantity department 😉 At least something. As many will know he actually is a very tall fella and as he stands on the edge of the stage he looks even more imposing. You wouldn’t want to be in a fight with him, he’d probably beat you in a second flat.

His tour has only just began and it will be going on all over the country. See Dara’s personal website for more info.

Llyn y Fan Fach

Today I was here. Took me a while to get here and find it. Had to give up the whole trek round the mountain ridges as I was going to run out of daylight by the end of the hike.
